A GA4 setup that survives a real business needs three things: a short list of events that mean something commercially, conversions defined from those events, and a report set small enough that a founder will actually open it. In markets where the funnel ends on WhatsApp, the click-to-chat event is the most important one you will create.
TL;DR
- Fewer events, defined properly, beat many events defined loosely.
- WhatsApp clicks are conversions here.
- Three reports, not thirty.
Start with the questions, not the tool
What does the business need to know each week? Usually: where traffic came from, what people did, and which channel produced customers. Every event and report should answer one of those. Anything else is noise that gets the dashboard ignored.
Events that matter
Page views are automatic. Add: click to WhatsApp, form submission, call click, add to cart, purchase, and one engagement event that indicates real reading. Name them consistently and document them, because the next person will inherit them.
For businesses that close in a chat, the click-to-WhatsApp event is the conversion. Instrument it with the source carried through, so the first message can be attributed.
Conversions and reports
Mark the two or three events that represent money as conversions. Then build three reports: acquisition by channel with conversions, landing pages with conversions, and a weekly summary. Put them in Looker Studio with a date range a founder can change.
Verify each conversion once against reality - a real form submission, a real chat - before trusting the number.
Common failures
Duplicate tags firing twice. Conversions defined on events that never fire. Referral exclusions missing so payment gateways appear as traffic sources. Cross-domain tracking absent between site and checkout. Check these on day one.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need server-side tagging?
Not on day one. Add it when ad blockers and data-saver browsers visibly erode the data.
Can I attribute WhatsApp sales?
Partially, by carrying source into the first message and logging conversions manually. See the WhatsApp attribution guide.
